Canine Unit

The Belvidere Police Department Canine (K9) Unit is comprised of two patrol officers that have been specially trained in the care, handling, and training of a canine for law enforcement use. The officers are partnered with a canine that is a working class dog who has been trained for law enforcement functions, i.e., criminal apprehension, evidence detection, and promoting favorable public relations.
Each canine team certifies annually through the North American Police Workdog Association (NAPWDA) in the following areas:
Each canine team also certifies annually through the Illinois Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) Drug Detection Canine Program in narcotics detection.
